An Interview With Kelly Flannery, the Singular Member of the BHS Diving Team

By Emma Conlon ’25

Did you know that BHS has a diving team? Easily forgotten due to the lack of participants, the diving team is a no-cut winter sport anyone can do. Kelly Flannery, ‘25, is currently the only member of the sport here at BHS. Although she has never been on a diving team before, she was excited to try it. I interviewed Kelly to see her thoughts on the diving team, and if she is planning to continue being part of it in the future.

  1. What made you want to join diving?

“I wanted to join the dive team because I thought it was a really cool and unique sport.”

  1. Who is your coach?

“Coach Katie. She is fearless, impressive, and outgoing. She is always one to say, ‘alright, now it’s time to just fall off the board backwards.’ She believes anyone can dive and is a true inspiration to me.”

  1. How do meets work when you’re the only member of the team?

“They work like how regular meets work. I haven’t really been in a meet, but I watched one the other day. You give them your meet sheet with all your dives, and then that’s given to the judges who will determine the score based on the degree of difficulty and how well you execute that skill. You’re judged individually, so it really doesn’t matter how many people are on your team.”

  1. Do you wish other people participated?

“Yes, I feel like it’s helped my confidence and made me more fearless, so I hope other people can benefit from it just like I have.”

  1. What does the future of the team look like, or what do you hope it looks like?

“The future of the team will definitely consist of me, because I love diving and I plan to continue it throughout high school. I do hope other people join, because all are welcome.”
