Small Businesses in Beverly and Their Effect on Local Teens

By Maria Braga ’24

Have you ever been inside a store that made you feel at home? That you continue to come to again and again even though nothing has changed? Many small businesses in Beverly, MA have had this impact on people, but more specifically teenagers.

Teenagers have so much going on! With managing school, athletics, extracurriculars, friends, and family, having a safe space where you feel comfortable is very important. Many teens are seen having the same cup of coffee from What’s Brewin’ every morning before school and ordering authentic Mexican food from La Victoria on the way home. This loyalty to local businesses creates a bond between the person and the small shop. Beverly is home to many small businesses that cater to numerous different people and their interests.

One small business that has greatly impacted a local Beverly teenager is Beantrust Coffeebar, located in the Cove area of town. Beantrust has “Something for EVERYONE” and the owner, Erik, is an incredibly nice person with a long history of coffee. Even though he was a part of the first company to distribute Peet’s beans and also introduced cold-brew coffee to Boston, he felt as though the connection between the owner and customer was missing. Since opening his small business, he has affected the lives of many, and has never failed to make one teenager smile while getting her coffee and pastry in the morning. The owner’s kindness makes her feel accepted every time she walks into the store and has her leaving with a smile on her face and some amazing coffee. Lily Kostro, BHS junior, recommends this cafe to everyone if you want to go somewhere that will make you feel like you belong there.

Another business called Art Supplies Wholesale is highly recommended by Lucy Stevens, another junior from Beverly. It is a hidden gem located in North Beverly with many art supplies that anyone can use whether they are a beginner or are on a more advanced level. Unlike many stores, this store has a dog who sometimes goes there for customers to see and interact with. As stated by Stevens, “the people are really nice and cool.” This store has a relaxing atmosphere and also has great quality, long-lasting supplies.

Even though these are only two businesses in Beverly, there are many more! Small businesses sell great products and are also able to form meaningful relationships with customers. Even though they may not always have as many options as chain stores, these companies prioritize their connection to their community. If you are a teenager, going to a small business and purchasing items you are excited about while also feeling welcome and accepted is a great way to reward yourself for beating everyday obstacles and to celebrate your accomplishments.
