A Film Review of the New Movie, Anyone But You

By Emma Conlon ‘25

Between the Barbie movie, Oppenheimer, Saltburn, and now Anyone But You, the rise of attendance at the movie theaters is at an all time high. Actors Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney were seen together in paparazzi photos, Instagram posts, and other various pictures in various places. Many fans speculated of a budding relationship between the two stars, however I think this was a genius PR move to get people talking about the film.

The movie itself is a classic romantic comedy. The character of Ben, played by Glen Powell and Bea, played by Sydney Sweeney, are the ideal couple. With their adorable meet-cute in a coffee shop the viewer immediately assumes they are perfect for each other. Later on though, Ben and Bea have a mutual hatred for each other. However, when mutual friends host a destination wedding in Australia, Bea and Ben are forced to reconnect. Despite the dramatics of an ex-boyfriend showing up unexpectedly and a nerve-wracking fall off a yacht into the deep Pacific Ocean, the storyline remains light and humorous and keeps the viewer on their toes. In my personal opinion as someone who’s favorite film genre is rom-coms and grew up with classics like Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, I loved this modern take on this timeless genre. I think the storyline is the perfect mix of comedy, misunderstanding, and drama. Everyone should check it out!
