The 9th-grade biology classes have just finished their biochemistry unit, and the Freshmen Red Sox team finished it off with a project-based learning activity. Randee Epie’s Biology classes all worked to put together a cookbook of different recipes from students, which was then printed out and distributed to the students to bring home to their families.
The project consisted of students from each class finding a family recipe to analyze and include. Students could pick recipes that fell into the topic of breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, making sure the recipe wasn’t already chosen by another peer. Then through a series of assignments, they analyzed the ingredients and makeup of the recipe and determined the nutritional value of a serving. With all of this information, students then created their recipe card, which included an ingredient list, directions, a picture, and macromolecules. All the classes then submitted their recipes and Mrs. Epie was able to digitally create the cookbook which was then printed out. The project was a creative and enjoyable way to put the knowledge of biochemistry to use in creating a gift for families. If you are interested in viewing the digital version of these recipes, a QR code is included above.
