William Kilcoyne was a member of the BHS band who graduated in 2022 who is now currently majoring in music composition. Recently, he had reached out to BHS Band Director Adam Costa to express his interest in writing a piece for the current 78 member ensemble.
Parts for this currently unnamed named composition were handed out a few weeks ago. The intentions were that the band would learn and play the piece at their spring concert, vote on a fitting name, and give their respective feedback to Kilcoyne.
When the music was first distributed, Kilcoyne expressed his inspiration behind his music. He described it as representing the playfulness of a child––not unlike his prior experience in band–– and the gradual growth as they learn to be serious.
“It’s cool that a graduated band member is able to write a piece for the band that he was a part of in high school,” flute player Mia Chavez remarks.
Saxophonist Grace Checksfield elaborates. “It’s so special for all of the juniors and seniors who personally knew him to play a piece written by someone we know. It’s also encouraging for the students who want to continue with music after high school to see future possibilities play out right in front of them.”
If you’re interested in listening to this piece in the future, stay tuned for the date of the BHS Music Department’s spring concert in May.
