BHS Senior Sophia Schlichtmann’s Short Film Holding the Past Wins Best Youth Film

By Emily Peterson ’22

The Just A Minute festival is a film competition that is exactly as its name suggests: create a short film in under sixty seconds and submit it for a chance at winning a cash prize. Sophia Schlichtmann wrote and directed the short film titled Holding the Past, starring Adam Harrison and Inez Ricciuti. It is a story about a girl, played by Inez, who reflects on the obstacles she faced in her past and her relationship with the other character, played by Adam.

“I was inspired by other films I saw in the past Just A Minute festival years,” Sophia states. “I wanted to make a story with a twist ending.” This film’s last few seconds reveal a twist that puts the entire short film into a different perspective. Sophia also chose to leave the ending slightly open ended “so people could imagine it for themselves and create their own perception of the story.” The ending twist was very dramatic; Sophia cited her love of dramatic changes in storytelling, and the way she made the twist was the most dramatic idea. No spoilers for the twist, you’ll just have to watch it yourself at justaminute.tv!

Sophia finished the interview by explaining the message she wants her viewers to take away from the film: “You should always appreciate people while they’re here, and to not bottle up and hide emotions from your loved ones.”
