With the start of a new school year, hybrid learning has posed new challenges and difficulties for students. For some, being taught in a physical classroom just once every three days can make understanding the material and keeping up with assignments a stressful task. In hopes of assisting students with their schoolwork, the BHS National Honor Society is offering virtual tutoring sessions held over Google Meet. Any student from BMS or BHS can fill out a form on the school’s NHS website and be matched with a student tutor who can help them in their chosen subject. Students are matched with tutors by Alexia Vayeos and Callie Marticio, the NHS Scholarship Officers for 2020.
“Students can be tutored in pretty much every subject, as our tutors volunteer to teach broad subjects,” says Alexia. “Callie and I match tutors and students according to their wanted subjects and times, and they meet up independently for however long they want.”
Another opportunity for volunteering is 3 Square, a program that was created by BHS students Charlie Mack (‘21), Ella Colten (‘20), Molly Pierce (‘19), and Amanda Desmond (‘19). The program was developed with the Beverly Recreation Department and provides virtual enrichment for elementary school students through virtual “rooms.” The three “rooms” include entertainment and games, tutoring, and creativity, and are run by BHS students throughout the week. “Their goal is to remotely provide supplemental learning, social interaction, and activities for the elementary students,” says Callie Marticio. “I personally love what they are doing for the community- and I know everybody else shares the same sentiments!”
NHS virtual tutoring and 3 Square are free, COVID-safe alternatives to private tutoring and in-person enrichment for students throughout Beverly schools.
