On December 16, many high-caliber students (and one teacher) of Beverly High School competed in a video game tournament where Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the game showcased. An elaborate bracket was drafted which featured a grand total of 12 intense match-ups, and the suspense built as participants studied their opponents countering moves and attacks. As a spectator, I watched in awe at the television as the players fought for the prize.
At promptly 3:00 P.M., the competition began with the first round, eliminating half of the competition. There was a fine variety of characters used, including Little Mac, Robin, Joker, Toon Link, and Lucina, all of which have their own unique abilities. The battleground most commonly used was the generic “Battlefield.” As the competition advanced into the second round, the fights were getting more and more climactic. A very balanced fight between Robin, a sorcerer, and Joker showed off the gaming prowess of some of the contestants, as well as the championship round where Little Mac swept Robin 2-0. The format of the competition was 3 Stock and 7:00, basically meaning three lives and seven minute round time.
Overall, the skills of the players were incredible and they made it so that the tournament was action-packed and filled with suspense and excitement. Hopefully another one of these tournaments pops up next year so more daring students can attempt to test their video gaming skills against others.
