A few weeks ago, Beverly High School students’ social media was abuzz. An instagram account run by an anonymous user began posting online confessions, which were sent in by students via direct message. Although the Instagrammer didn’t sign off in the iconic way as our beloved Gossip Girl did, we certainly felt the snark left when the caption ended with tagging the person who the confession was about.
The account represents what social media has become: a place full of cruelness and no privacy. What started out as a practical joke, ended up having to be shut down by the administration. What was the need for this whole account in the first place? And why did it gain so much attention? In just a few days, the account had hundreds of followers, all students from our school, liking, commenting, and sending confessions in. Were we all just so bored, desperate for a little drama, that we sent in private details about others?
The account has been deleted, but created quite a stir with the few days it was up. Emails from Principal Taylor were sent to parents and almost every student knew what you meant when asked “Have you seen the insta account?” Privacy was leaked, lies were spread, and for what? A joke, something to laugh about? Is it really that funny to expose our peers and cause them to feel uncomfortable? Hopefully, BHS students have learned our lesson and we won’t have any wannabe Gossip Girl’s tagging us in posts any time soon.
