The highly anticipated Met Gala took place on Monday, May 1, 2023. The theme this year was in tribute to the late creative director and designer, Karl Lagerfeld, which highlights the numerous achievements made by him. This doesn’t come without concern however, as Lagerfeld has had some controversial opinions in the past. For example, the time he had a mountain constructed out of glacial ice straight from Sweden for Chanel’s fall 2010 ready-to-wear show, and the time he sent model Claudia Schiffer on the runway, wearing a Chanel dress embroidered with a muslim sacred text in 1994. Despite the scrutiny of the theme however, the 2023 Met Gala is set to open a new exhibit at the museum called “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” to showcase the immense achievements Lagerfeld made for fashion.
As the world watches the richest and most glamorous celebrities walk down the carpet in top designer items, everyone seems to have opinions, myself included. Here are my personal top favorite Met looks of 2023: Dua Lipa wearing a vintage Chanel bride dress that Claudia Schiffer wore. Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila Moss in light pink Fendi gowns looked fresh and glowy. Anne Hathaway, who wore a white tweed Versace dress, paid homage to Karl in the perfect way, as he was known for his use of tweed material. I also loved Phoebe Bridgers, who was wearing a black Tory Burch dress with white pearls, and Gisele Bundchen who stunned in a white dress and feathered white cape, both of which are from the Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007 collection, which at the time Karl Lagerfeld was creative director for.
The Met Gala isn’t all about the glamor and the celebrities however, it also is a charity event, and raises money to help support and fund the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is where the gala takes place. Everyone can agree that tuning in to watch the A-listers talk about fashion and art is the fun part though, and judging their outfits of course.
