I won’t lie- I’ve never read a young adult novel with a football player as the main character. But given how brilliant and heartbreaking Neil Shusterman’s Scythe was to me, I knew I couldn’t resist reading his latest book Game Changer. And what a ride it was. Main character Ash is your typical all-American teenager- until a clash on the football field leaves his world looking slightly different… and the more collisions he has, the more the world changes.
Young adult literature is typically predictable and shallow, but Shusterman chooses to push boundaries, making you ask yourself, if I really was the center of the universe, would that be a good thing? A timeless message complete with dynamic characters and a sci-fi edge, Game Changer is a sports novel turned interdimensional philosophy lesson you won’t want to miss.
