How to Make the Most of an East Coast Summer

By Gianna Ferace ’25

In the beginning of the summer, it seems as if the next two months will stretch on forever. We enjoy the first few days sleeping in, tanning on the beach, enjoying an ice cream cone with our friends, the usual sort of thing. But pretty soon, it gets old. As relaxing as it is to not worry about any homework or deadlines, the last thing we want to realize the night before the first day of school is that you wasted away those summer days. So what can you do to make this summer your best yet? Read on to find out.

Think about all the gorgeous sailboats you see glimmering on the water while at the beach. Did you know you can rent one for the day? Pop by Gloucester Boat Rental or Boat Charter North Shore and ask about their day rates! You and a group of friends can spend the day on the water, and stop by Captain Dusty’s for a cone!

Over on Railroad Street (close to Rantoul), the farmer’s market is open every Monday, between the hours of 3-7. There are all sorts of local vendors down there, and live music as well! Not only are there fresh fruits and veggies, but baked goods, honey, candles, and the list goes on. Be sure to check it out and support our locals!

Renting a bike is a great activity that you can do solo or with friends. Salem Cycle, located on 72 Washington Street is a nearby spot to grab a rental. The shop also sells bikes if you are looking to buy your own. They are open from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday.

Select hotels will allow you to buy a pass and use all the amenities they offer, without a room reservation! You can use the pool, spa, restaurant, or the rooftop (this all depends on where you rent from, of course). A few examples here in Boston are the Colonnade Hotel ($50 per day), the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center ($25 per day), and the InterContinental Boston ($40 per day). Check out their websites for more information.

There is so much to do here in New England during the summer, and we’re so lucky to live in an area that offers us these opportunities. Hopefully a few of the activities above will spark your interest!
