The Rotary-sponsored Interact Club held its first meeting in the BHS library on October 15th. Spearheaded by juniors Laken Tassinari, Hannah Costa, and senior Ella Colten, the club provides students with the opportunity to network with different business professionals within the Beverly community. “One of the biggest majors in the world is business administration,” said Colten. “A lot of students from Beverly are going to be going into business, so why not teach them now how to be responsible business people? We started Interact to give kids the opportunity to network, see what they’re interested in, and explore that field a bit more.”
The club aims to create this connection through the Beverly Rotary Club, an organization of 100 Beverly residents who promote the motto “service above self”. The Rotary is dedicated to serving society through fundraising and backing projects such as Interact. Beverly students remember the Rotary as the association who purchased dictionaries for each of them in the third grade.
Co-founder Tassinari stated how the club is “really geared towards students. At our high school, having students come to our Interact Club is important because they’re having these pre-college experiences with business leaders in our community, people who’ve already had these experiences and they’re passing them down to them.” Marketing classes at the high school are popular courses to take, as students aspire to have the opportunity to attend DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), a series of competitions based on business and marketing skills, conferences in the spring.
Interact Club will be made up of four committees. The Club Committee is focused on developing ideas for club meeting programs and club publicity, as well as maintaining a record of the club. The Finance Committee will act as treasury, deciding how the club will fund its activities, tying in students learning how a nonprofit operates. The Service Committee is tasked with organizing one community project each year, and the International Understanding Committee brings that goal to an international scale.
“We’re really looking forward to making great projects and looking to help out both internationally and locally in our community,” said Hannah Costa. Interact Club will continue to meet Tuesdays before school in the library for easy accessibility to all students.
