The BHS Music Department: Where the Panthers Play

By Norah Jewett ’25

As a general rule, high school is a time where kids can find cliques that they snugly fit into. And of course, at Beverly High School, the music department is no exception.

Composed of band, jazz band, strings and several chorale groups, the department includes a wide range of talents and abilities. Many of these seniors have been a part of the music department for years now– some starting their music careers back in middle school.

Department members in their final year at BHS reflected upon their journeys during their time with the program.

“The people I’ve met, the memories I’ve created,” BHS Senior Eddie Sacco said, “have all made me part of who I am today.”

“I cannot imagine a place where my high school career could have been better spent,” Sacco said. “Band has always made me feel like a part of something, like no matter what else happens there is somewhere I belong.”

One element that unites seniors is the credit they give to this department in helping shape them.

“Band and the music department has allowed me personally to grow so much as a person,” said Rebecca Curley, the senior Drum Major of the band.

“The music department to me honestly has influenced me to be more comfortable with myself and helped me find amazing people that are like family to me,” said Sarah Dennis, member of the chorus group.

Sacco has been a BHS drum-line member since 2019.

The special bond developed between music students was a common theme of seniors’ comments.

“It’s just such a welcoming community that I couldn’t imagine not being in my life,” said senior Sarah Dennis, ‘23.

Curley added, “It is a very non-judgmental and hilarious group of people that I will cherish forever.”

The seniors will go their own ways after graduation but the memories will endure.

Being part of the music department “will always remain the most special and memorable part of my high school experience,” Sacco said.

“It has been such a wonderful opportunity to learn, make music, and have fun,” said Curley.
