The Biggest High School Theater Event of the Year: Drama Fest 2023

By Norah Jewett ’25

This year, Beverly High’s theater department, Stage Right Drama Club, participated in METG’s Drama Fest 2023, and yet again, it was hosted at Beverly Middle School on March 5. The day was jam packed with eight forty minute performances from schools scattered across the coast: Beverly performed Game of Tiaras; Malden, The STEPMother; Marblehead, Beowulf; Danvers, Once Upon a Bedtime Story; Georgetown, Dracula; Swampscott, Christopher Durang Explains it All to You; Boston Latin, Qrumpet; and Lynn English, Scenes from the Killing Game. Beverly High’s production of Game of Tiaras was a comedy involving classic Disney characters, Shakespeare, and certain plot points of Game of Thrones. It was a labor of love (and stress) of the combined efforts of both cast and crew. Beverly’s light manager, Josh Sidmore, called it “the best day of hell you will ever experience.” Members of the cast and crew of all participating schools also remarked on how fun the day was, but also how nerve-racking it can always be. One Malden student states, “I’ve had so much fun preparing for this day! And it’s so great getting to spend a day with other theater kids, as stressful as it can be. It’s such a nice environment.” The fun of the environment itself seems to be a common theme. While there is some aura of competition in the air, at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of high schoolers sharing what they do best with each other: theater.
