This year at Beverly High School, many new teachers have joined the faculty. One such teacher is Mr. Sean Fitzpatrick, who attended both the Massachusetts College of Art and UMass Boston. He is an English teacher and teaches a class for the BevCam channel. He was recently interviewed as a new member of the faculty.
How did you figure out you wanted to teach?
I really kind of thought that, around the time my son was born, I thought that I would be a really good fit for teaching and that teaching would be a really meaningful and purposeful career to dedicate myself to.
If you weren’t teaching, what do you think you would be doing?
I think I would be involved in the arts somehow.
What hobbies do you have outside of teaching?
I like to watch films, and I like to watch sports as well, and I love reading. I love to read about politics and history.
What is your favorite part of teaching at BHS so far?
The kids. I have found the kids to be inquisitive, curious, dedicated, and hardworking.
How do you view today’s student body compared to your experience as a teenager?
I think that nowadays kids are more tech-savvy, of course, but there also seems to be a sense that kids feel a greater sense of urgency to tackle the big problems of the world in a way I didn’t experience while I was in high school.
If there was any advice you could give to students at BHS, what would it be?
High school is a unique time in your life and there are so many opportunities available to you. It’s a great time to take risks and to get involved, so get out there and try your hand at new things.
Beverly welcomes Mr. Fitzpatrick to the high school and hopes he will continue to enjoy teaching here.
