Exploring JC Phillips Nature Preserve

By Grace Corbett ‘28

Despite the low temperatures of this frosty winter season, Beverly residents are still recommended to get out into the woods and experience the natural beauty of Beverly’s trails! The recent snowfall only enhances their elegance. Many are aware of the common walks, such as Beverly Common, or Sally Milligan Trails. There are also lesser-known hikes that deserve some attention. Looking closer at the maps, a hidden gem is located to the northwest of Moraine Farm. The 85-acre JC Phillips Nature Preserve is an easy 2.6 mile route that skirts Wenham Lake. We share this reservoir for obtaining drinking water with Salem and Wenham.

The Preserve has soft-soiled paths that wind their way around the Greenbelt and Trustees’ property. The trees are lush green in summer, with scattered roots and jagged rocks. The towering pines and shrubs show off their autumnal foliage during the cooler months, and with the occasional snowfall, their branches sparkle in crystal white glory. The trail can immerse you into the environment, with the forests, the lake, and even the on-site mansion ruins that spark your inner curiosity. Many dog-walkers enjoy this path, long enough to get a nice stretch and still carry on with their day.

The namesake of the estate comes from John Charles (JC) Phillips. He passed away in 1855, before his landscaper could complete the design for a new farm. His son, William, built a mansion on the property around 1913. Today, only the ruins remain, due to the unfortunate fire in 1968. There is an old iron gate, perishing towers with large stones, and a few deteriorating statues strewn across the area. These crumbles are left for exploration, now overgrown and covered in graffiti.

For those who participate in cross-country at BHS in autumn, this course is called home. Lots of panther pride is demonstrated here during the fall, along with sweat, bruises, and blood. Runners take on the five kilometer race, including two widely-dreaded hills that demand every ounce of your energy whilst racing. Don’t worry, no one has to run up these hills- unless you’re feeling brave!

Chloe Bossler (‘26) kindly adds, “Despite the hills, racing at JC Phillips is one of the main things I look forward to in cross country season because we get to enjoy all of the beautiful trails and watch as the leaves change!”

Other Beverly citizens claim, “These woods are calm and peaceful. The JC Phillips Estate has a perfect blend of trails, forests, and water, complete with a touch of history.”

If you get the time this winter season, put on your hiking boots and head out to this trailhead. You won’t regret it!
