A Farewell to the Ledger

By Nola Minogue ’21

Dear Ledger readers,

My name is Nola Minogue. For the past four years, I have been editor-in-chief of the BHS Ledger. This involves formatting the layout of the paper, copyediting articles, and general staff management. Since I will soon be leaving for my REACH project, this is my last issue as editor for the Ledger. I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you loyal readers for keeping this paper alive and appreciating the importance of local news. Larger newspapers often miss the day-to-day events that affect everyday people, and it is upto local news to cover what hits close to home, and to keep those in authority accountable.

Funnily enough, this is my second time writing a piece of this nature. In eighth grade at Briscoe Middle School, I was founder and editor of Briscoe Briefs, a publication which continues to this day under the watchful eye of Ms. Alix Woznick. It was through that paper my love of student news and working with other writers grew, and propelled me to join the Ledger my freshman year. There was a staff of three people then, including myself, and the Ledger only printed once per month- now, we have a staff of eleven and publish biweekly. I am so incredibly proud of our writers- they are all creative, open-minded individuals with incredible work efforts and endless talent and originality. They are everything that this paper is, and are the backbone of every issue, every article, every word. I have watched them grow throughout the years, and seen how each article is better than the last, and how our meetings have become a discussion of ideas between old friends. I am eternally grateful for their hard work and perseverance. It has turned this paper into a force to be reckoned with.

I’d like to also thank Mr. Sean Fitzpatrick, our advisor for the past two years. Mr. Fitzpatrick brings unmatched enthusiasm and creativity to each meeting, encourages us to see past the main events and delve into the deeper meanings of topics, and is everything we could ask for in an advisor. His dedication to our publication and carrying it above and beyond all expectations gives me the full confidence that the Ledger is in great hands and will continue to prosper. Thank you for all your support. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention someone who has always cared for this paper and gave it the tools and resources to prevail; Ms. Barbara Fecteau. She guided the newspaper to where it is today, and we could not have done it without her. Thank you, Ms. Fecteau.

Well, this is my last deadline. Time to step away from the keyboard and let the Ledger take on a new life. If I’ve learned anything these past four years, it’s that you get what you give out of high school. I’m ready to see where the Ledger will go now.

Signing off,

Nola Minogue

Editor-in-Chief

PS: Shoutout to the lovely and talented Mia Occhino ‘23 who will be your new editor-in-chief!
