Halloween Tourism Booms in Salem Despite Persisting COVID Regulations

By Klea Gjergji ’23

Hop on your broomsticks! The City of Salem is opening back up for the season of Halloween with COVID-19 regulations to ensure the safety of tourists and citizens.

More than one million tourists visit The City of Salem every year due to the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692, however this year things are going to look a little different due to the new
COVID-19 regulations.

Salem will hold a mask mandate for all indoor public areas along with public and private transportation (including buses, ferries, taxis) until November 13th. In addition, attendees of indoor events of more than 100 people taking place between October 1-31 are required to show a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event, regardless of vaccination status.

The popular attraction, the Salem Witch Museum is also holding a strict mask mandate along
with their installment of sneeze guards and hand sanitizer throughout the building. ‘Ghost City
Tours’ which gathers about 200,000 tourists annually is also changing up their protocols by
accepting contactless payment, and requiring reservations.
