Beverly Welcomes New Superintendent

By Amelia Jewett ’27

On Thursday, April 18, the Beverly School Committee offered the Superintendent position to Dr. Peter Cushing. Following the retirement of former Superintendent Dr. Charochak, the city put together the Superintendent Screening Committee which was composed of Beverly school administrators, teachers, parents and other community members.

The school committee voted to name Peter Cushing, Jennifer Turner and Sean Gallagher as the finalists for the position on April 2nd. Gallagher withdrew from the search process over the weekend, but the committee proceeded with interviews with the other candidates on the 14th and 15th. They also visited the Beverly Public schools and participated in sessions with community members held at the middle school in the evening.

Peter Cushing served as Assistant Superintendent of Enrichment and Innovation for Medford Public Schools beginning in 2019. He has also been principal at Bartlett High School, Narragansett Middle School, and Vice Principal of Narragansett Regional High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics from Saint Anselm College and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and a Doctorate in Education from Boston College.

The School Committee will continue to provide updates as they proceed with a smooth transition in leadership. They will also share upcoming events and opportunities to meet the new Superintendent. The city of Beverly and its members are excited to have Dr. Cushing to help lead our district forward.
