The Spirit of Giving: Angel Trees and Toys for Tots

By Danika Mansfield ’29

In a time where society’s culture is dominated by mass consumerism, we often forget the real reason for the holidays. We are provided with opportunities to give back to our community and perform simple acts of kindness for those who need it most. Programs such as Angel Tree and Toys for Tots are perfect for capturing the spirit of the season and spreading joy to all corners of the world. These gifts go beyond just material value; they create moments of hope and happiness for children and parents who may otherwise be unable to provide presents for young family members.

Partnering with the Salvation Army, individuals adopt an “angel” by choosing an ornament and fulfilling the corresponding gift wish. Various public locations tend to host these “Angel Trees” with common places being stores, churches, and nonprofits. Once donors return their items to the sponsoring organization, the Salvation Army distributes them to the corresponding families. This process not only meets immediate needs but also fosters a sense of community, as strangers come together to support one another during a time meant to bring festivity and joy.

Similarly, Toys for Tots works by collecting new, unwrapped toys through local campaigns. They then sort and distribute the items through coordinators and volunteers. These coordinators partner with local social welfare agencies to ensure the toys reach children who might otherwise go without presents. The collaboration between volunteers, agencies, and donors creates a powerful network of generosity, impacting many lives. Growing up, my dad and I would donate to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which supports the main program by fundraising and providing assistance to local organizations. They significantly support organizations by purchasing toys when donations are low, ensuring no child is left out, regardless of the public’s generosity.

In the end, both Angel Trees and Toys for Tots are more than just gift-giving programs; they are sources of hope and joy during the holidays. They remind us that even small actions can create lasting memories. By participating, we not only brighten a child’s holiday but also demonstrate the true spirit of the season.
