Shamrock Shenanigans: Festive St. Patrick’s Day Activities

By Amelia Jewett ’27

The month of March is often characterized by the thawing of mountains of snow, the first hints of spring, and, of course, St. Patrick’s Day. Celebrated every March 17, the Irish-affiliated holiday is now widely known for its parades, leprechaun traps, and love of all things green. While originally a religious feast day, the holiday has grown into a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and heritage. Whether you’re looking for entertainment on a night out or just want a cozy at-home activity for friends and family, there is a way for everyone to take part in the festivities.

Cook or Bake a New Recipe

St. Patrick’s-themed foods often feature hearty Irish classics along with festive green desserts. Those looking for something more traditional can whip up quintessential comfort staples from the Emerald Isle, which often consist of potatoes, stews, breads, and Guinness. Iconic recipes include corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, savory shepherd’s pie, and crowd-pleasing potato leek soup.

For those seeking a colorful sweet treat, try preparing Lucky Charms marshmallow treats, a mint-flavored Shamrock Shake, or Irish cream liqueur–flavored desserts such as cheesecakes or brownies.

Attend a Parade

Many cities host major celebratory parades on the day of or prior to the holiday. The South Boston Parade will occur on March 15 at 11:30 a.m. The event is hosted by State Senator Nick Collins and will feature federal, state, and local elected officials, along with military leaders and representatives from the Irish government.

An annual tradition, the St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast in Boston is scheduled for 8:30–11:30 a.m., when the community comes together to celebrate the feast of Ireland’s patron saint. To honor America’s upcoming 250th birthday, organizers have decided to flip the parade route, now beginning at Andrew Square and ending on A Street.

If you plan to bring young children, a family-friendly zone will be located along M Street to prevent unruly behavior and make the parade enjoyable for all ages.

Arts and Crafts Activities

If you have young kids at home, finding a hands-on, holiday-themed craft can keep them occupied for hours. For a magical element, consider constructing creatively designed leprechaun traps. Other ideas include painting shamrocks, arranging a scavenger hunt for gold, and making leprechauns out of paper plates. Older individuals can try crocheting shamrocks, constructing a themed wreath, or painting mason jars.

No matter how you decide to spend the day, be sure to dig out your green clothing and take some quality time with family and friends. Regardless of ancestry, the holiday offers a reminder to take pride in our heritage, global cultures, and diversity.
